A clean room is an environment that has very low controlled levels of airborne particles specified by the number of particles per cubic meter at a specified particle size range. For example a typical urban environment contains 35,000,000 particles per cubic meter in the sCize range 0.5 micrometer and larger, while an ISO-1 clean room allows only 12 particles per cubic meter of 0.3 micrometer and smaller.
Clean rooms require pretty sophisticated and properly maintained HVAC and filtering systems.
When a hard drive is opened outside a clean room environment, it exposes the delicate platters and read-write heads to dust and other particles in the air. During hard drive ‘s operation magnetic heads travel over the surface of platters at super fast speeds, flying less than 3 nanometers away from the platter surface, so if they come into contact with particles stuck to the platters this may result in head crashes which can seriously damage the drive making data recovery much more complicated, sometimes – impossible.
